Music, candle light and wine with good friends: because money does not have any value
ONS SING BAIE, BAIE DANKIE…
Thank you for the music
This decor in out sitting room happened by accident. Both the children took music lessons and I had all the old music pages from their primary school years and this open space under the stairs appeared (after renovating and building) in the sitting room… an ideal niche to place the electronic piano.
I made my own modge podge with wood glue and Rooibos tea to create an antique look on the wall with the music pages.
One thing led to another and although younger generations do not always like the idea of CD’s we still enjoy to take out a CD and the different little shelves gathered from here and there appeared to be ideal to organise different genres of our favourite music.

The LP’s of days gone by were the “left overs” of a friend’s party bought at a farmers market and they are not suitable to play anymore and thus form the back drop of the adjacent wall.
The extra music stand appeared to be ideal to place the very old Volkspele (traditional dance and music) photo with my dad (then 12 years) on the accordion.
WIT OF ROOI?
No more whining, there is enough wine
A had this beautiful wine cupboard made years ago by a crafty family member but the yellow-wood panels are under too much pressure in the dry Free State province and the big crack on the middle panel appeared again and again. The solution was then to safe and collect empty wine bottles with different labels we either have enjoyed or to buy a wine just for the sake of the beautiful label (with the cupboard panel in mind). After many hours in the kitchen warming the bottles in the oven I managed to remove the labels and placed them on a hard board. This time I bought real modge podge since I was not willing to burn my fingers again… literally. Very thin dowel sticks were cut and placed to round off the panel and to restore this wine cabinet holding my wine glasses and on the top the first guitar and viola of the children.

Fire away
Over the years I have received many candle holders stowed away in cupboard and when even there is load shedding (beurtkrag) we take them out or find the one or two beautiful holders in the sitting room. We love to make a fire but that only happens between May – August and the candle holders on top of the fire place is a good second option for fire while we waiting for the fire place to create atmosphere when we enjoy a good glass of wine and music.
ELKE SENT WERD
In for a penny, in for a pound
The lamp shade was still in a working condition, but the look was more than only last decade’s fashion, so… I washed my tin full of bronze almost worthless coins. A mixture of hot water, dish-washing liquid, tartaric acid and lemon juice help to restore the coins to the initial copper color. I fixed the coins in random order on the shade with wood glue and when it was dry sprayed the shade and coins with translucent varnish to help retain the different copper colors. When I am bored with this, I would hopefully have another tin saved-up to buy something different/ new.
