Things and people to be cherished

GEDENKNIS – DIEP VOETSPORE IN ONS LEWENS

Shrines – foot prints in our hearts

Shrines” to remember some of the loved ones that influenced my/our lives in a very direct manner were created during a holiday break. The tins and memorabilia inside (ornaments) were covered with strong plastic (often used for upholstery covers in public spaces) to keep it clean and dry.

This were fixed to a wooden trellis in the shade next to our woodpile for warm winter evenings.

Old tin cookie tin jars were painted inside and then filled with items (musical artefacts from days gone by, cake decorations, coloring crayons and music sheets, books, crucifix, angel figurine, empty camphor cream container, needle and embroidery work, bird figurines, beautiful rocks, etc.) that tell the personal story between these people and the people in our house. I have fixed the items with a glue gun to the cookie tin.

Each tin also holds a key ring with a photo of this special person whose foot steps left special foot prints in our hearts.

I dry my fresh flowers that are not that fresh anymore and put them outside in the big tin shoe next to the “shrines” that keep the memories of loved ones alive.

I am home where there is a fire place

Limited storage to keep the wood for a barbeque and especially the fire place inside were resolved when we decided to stack the wood in a visually pleasing manner and at hand.

When dear friends then made me this “insect hotel” as a birthday gift from all kinds or re-used material on their small holding, the colors matched the wood pile perfectly and we made space for this artwork from nature at the top of the wood pile.
